Computer Information Systems - Understanding the Discipline

There are many names for the technology oriented professions. Perhaps the acronyms CIS, MIS, IT, and IS1 may have a familiar sound. The reality is that to a certain degree these are different names for the same overall discipline. But our purpose today is not to debate the differences between these.

Instead our focus is on understanding “what” Computer Information Systems (CIS) implies. Computer Information Systems is a multi-disciplinary field which pulls from the knowledge bases of many other areas such as business, psychology, science, et cetera. It is concerned with the application and utilization of technology to streamline business operations. It is undeniable that technology plays a critical role in organizations of all sizes.
